Nothing beats a cup of hot, spiced Masala Chai! It’s the perfect way to start the day or unwind a sad cloudy day in the afternoon. This recipe is extra special because my husband, Harsh, makes the best chai. He learned it from his home, and now it’s our little ritual—he brews, and I sip happily.

What is Masala Chai?

Masala means spices in Hindi and Chai means tea. In Gujarati we call it Cha instead of Chai so essentially Masala Chai is a spiced tea. Black tea is simmered with warming earthy spices and whole milk for a balanced and creamy cup of chai. It’s best served with Parle-G biscuits or in my Gujarati household basically with almost anything like Dhokla, Thepla or even Handvo.

💡Did you know? Chai just means “tea” – In Hindi and many other languages, “chai” simply means tea, so saying “chai tea” is technically redundant!

💌Why I Love This Masala Chai/Cha:

There is a lot of memories to why I love this Masala Chai. First off it began as a mini ritual where my grandma used to give me a 1 rupee coin every morning to buy my favourite Parle-G biscuit packet while she brew some good masala cha for me. It was always an exciting morning I still remember the happiness of dunking those biscuits into the warm, fragrant tea and savouring each bite from that packet. This tea always takes me back to that simple but exciting childhood memory for my love of Chai and Parle-G! Proof that a cup of chai is more than just a drink; it’s pure nostalgia!

When I told my then boyfriend now Husband about this core memory of masala cha he then shows up next day with a cup of masala chai and a parle G biscuit packet which he specially went to the store to bring for me – those little gestures he makes for me really just melts my heart ahhh. That tea was extra delicious of course!

The Masala Chai also reminds of my bonding with my mom, as I grew older I reduced having tea on a daily basis but every weekend I would share masala chai with Mumma and sip on some random gossip haha. Always fun hearing mom rant!

I’d love to know your reasons for loving Masala Chai – please do let me know and as always I hope you make this pot of instant happiness because it’ll be Chai-mazing!

~with love, Jahnvi
